Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas and operating in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the People's Republic of China. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band following drug-related charges. The band continued to play with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It was not as popular as IV. The group managed to release an album that topped the charts, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. The album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was also the first to feature the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was a return to a traditional sextet style, and an even more consistent and powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. Its more punk-rock sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity on drums, and a more mature, confident vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was sharper, more intricate, and less derivative than earlier recordings.
After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a new studio album a few months after and embarked on a tour around the world to support the album. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to find songs that had never been recorded prior to. The album was released in 2001 and released as a double album titled Then and Now. It was the first album by the band without the single track "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and the vocalist Williams suffered from a bad laryngitis condition which hampered his singing. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia were in England early in 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be reformed. The lineup, with the exception of Howe who was occupied with Yes during that time, became Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also featured a guest appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
